"Don't make me bust out my Constitution"

Senator Byrd urges Americans to keep the Founding Fathers close to their hearts:

"'I carry a pocket-sized edition of the Constitution with me every where I go, whether I'm back home in West Virginia or speaking out on the Senate floor. Now you can, too. You can download and print the DSCC's exclusive personal Constitution.' Byrd's appeal accuses Republicans of threatening to 'undermine the system of checks and balances described in the Constitution and the fundamental rights we hold dear' by changing the rules governing confirmation of judges.
'The best way to defend the Constitution is to elect more Democrats to the United States Senate.'"

(More after shameless personal plug picture...)

I got my pocket Constitution from Cato--a group that comes pretty close to being the antithesis of the DSCC. They obviously swing right, but had something to say when Congress overstepped its bounds last week:

"'Republicans today are as guilty, almost, as the Democrats were over their long reign in power,' said Roger Pilon, director of the Center for Constitutional Studies at the Cato Institute, a group that advocates limited government and individual rights. 'Now that they find themselves in power they are not at all reluctant to use government for the ends they favor.'"

Good old Pilon, always managing to take a good natured shot at the dems even when he's condemning republicans. As he told us kids in DC, they're both wrong--evil bifurcators, they are. Little DC humor for you there.

I thought I was a moderate, but the more I listen to Fox and Rush, I find myself becoming more liberal and more in favor of the nuclear option. Here's why:

1) There has been a recession after every war dating back to the French and Indian War. On 3/31/05, an Army General suggested, that the drawdown in Iraq may start over the next 3 months. A recession would follow the end within a year. If not an end to the war, the Pres will need to implement a draft and find tax revenues to support a perpetual war.
2) The fiscal policies of the 1920's, which did not have the huge deficit spending of the current administration, caused a major depression that booted the Republicans out of full power for 70 years.
3) Today's age and future retiree demographics mirror that of the 1920s.
4) Cost of soaring fuel prices is beginning to affect the economy, which will not show up on Gov't Stats for 3 months.
5) Gitlow vs the State of NY-1925, which applied the most liberal amendment of the constitution to the states, by use of the 14th amendment (a Republican amendment), was written by the most conservative court in our country's history. (How were they to know that 48 years later it would be the crux of Roe v Wade?)
6) Gore and Kerry lost by the slimmest electoral college in our nation's history and the Dems are only 5 seats away from a split senate.

It's all coming together for the 2006-08 elections. A 50/50 split in the Senate and a Democrat in the White House. Yes, I'm all for the nuclear option. And, if this all doesn't happen until 2012, I can live with conservative justices who will follow the reasoning which gave our great country the Gitlow, Brown, and Roe rulings.

Please, bust out OUR Constitution, the Federalist Papers, 700 years of English Common Law court rulings, and failures of Greek/Roman democracies. It will make our country even better!

"Please, bust out OUR Constitution"
as opposed to "my"--definitely wasn't claiming it to be my own...but you flatter.

It'll take more than historical precedent to win elections in 2006/08, and what happens when the majority swings the other way again? Dems get nuked.

Aside: I don't usually get too many comments (besides the inane "hot babe" ones apparently) but out of context and on a tangent, they can be difficult to follow. And given how sarcastic political blogs can be (or at least I can be) it's sometimes hard to tell which side of the fence someone's on. Takes more process time to see what someone's getting at. No real purpose to this particular comment though.
